EMSOS COMMUNITY CAMPSITE IS COOMUNITY BASED CAMPING SITE TO HOST TOURIST WITH INTEREST WITH BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION AND LEISURE AROUND LAKE BOGORIA;

BACKGROUND

Emsos is located south of lake Bogoria National reserve. It is rich in flora and fauna that forms an extension of the lake bogoria unique resources. These include vegetation dominated by riverine Acacia and fig trees interspersed with shrubs and wild animals. its ecotourism potential enormous and less tapped. The community relies mainly on livestock which become great problem to meet the needs of the community hence this project forms an alternative source of livelihoods. This project targets the whole society since this meet the livelihoods of the people within Emsos and as is wider comprising of 4,000 people surrounding its catchments area. Emsos community campsites is a self –help institution located at Emsos trading centre and is registered with the department of culture and social services, Koibatek district. our registered membership is 30.Realising the ecotourism potential of Emsos area, we initiated the project.

OBJECTIVES

The project was initiated based on the following objectives:

1. To improve the livelihood of the youth through establishment of alternative income generating activities. 2. To create awareness on the wise use of natural resource within their environment.

3. To reduce wildlife conflicts through establishment of activities that strive balance between human needs and ecosystems functions

4. To help in conservation of environment

5.To prevent youth from engaging in life disruptive behaviors such drug abuse, theft and other social evils. 6. To act as education tool and research resource

EXISTING LINKAGES

The project enjoys strong linkages with world wide fund for nature (WWF),county council of Koibatek and Baringo,Friends of Nature Bogoria and University of Leicester research student of ecology.

PROJECT ADMINSTRATION

The project is administered by group officials that comprise the chairman, secretary and management committee.

IMPLEMENTING AGENTS

Emsos community campsites is project that belongs to local group bringing together youth of blend gender concerned about the conservation and exploitation of natural resources for sustainable livelihoods. Members are drawn from poor population mainly livestock and subsistence farmers. they have feeling that with the development of ecotourism project their living standard will improve. inturn the will appreciate the wildlife hence the conservation of biodiversity is realized.
